Exploiting a News Story

Exploiting a News Story

Exploitation is a complex issue that can occur anywhere, especially in urban areas, and affects all ages, genders, and races. It involves being groomed and forced into doing things against their will for someone else’s benefit. Exploited individuals may be found in situations related to physical violence and abuse, including criminal activity.

Types of Exploitation

Criminal exploitation – a person who is forced into criminal activity like selling or exporting illegal goods (e.g. drugs); engaging in physical or greedy crimes; or exploiting others.

Labor exploitation – a person who has been employed in unsafe conditions for little to no pay. This person may experience little freedom and may be obligated to live with the other workers. This type of exploitation is a common practice in modern slavery.

The Right exploits Nashville shooting to escalate Anti-trans Rhetoric (WashingtonPost)

A wave of anti-trans rhetoric has emerged from commentators and politicians of the Republican Party from Nashville’s Christian school shooting on Monday. The incident took six lives, and raised a backlash to the high rates of transgenders in today’s world.

There have been attempts to connect transgenders to violence in spite of the fact that these individuals are hardly the prime suspects of mass shootings. According to experts in criminal justice, mass killings are mainly committed by cisgender males. In fact, many studies show that transgenders are more often victims of violence.

The Nashville shooter, Audrey Hale, 28, motives remain unclear as well as Hal’s gender identity. The police announced that Hale was transgender and used manly pronouns on her social profile.

Despite that, Tucker Carlson, a host on Fox News, showcased the shooter’s photo with the caption ‘Trans Killer’ on Tuesday

On Wednesday, rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene theorized during an congressional hearing and Twitter that the cause of the shooting may had something to do with hormone treatment, despite there being any evidence that the shooter was on hormonal therapy.

Also on Wednesday, Donald Trump also connected the Nashville shooting and “the anger that was caused” to hormone treatment. Though he, too, bore no factual evidence. During an interview with John Fredericks, a host on talk radio, Trump mentioned his ban on transgenders from enlisting in the military because “the amount of drugs they have to take is so incredible.” However, studies and research have shown that many transgenders do not take hormone therapy.

Still, there are others who believe the main focus should be on transgenders rather than guns.

Monday evening, Donald Trump Jr. tweeted, “maybe, rather than talking about guns we should be talking about lunatics pushing their gender affirming bulls--- on our kids?”. The next day he tweeted, “there’s a clear epidemic of trans/non-binary mass shooters.”

However, the fact checker from the Washington Post failed to provide any outbreaks of mass shooters who were transgender, and awarded Trump’s claim four Pinocchios, a nomination designed for “whoppers.”

And the story continues…
